Fire! Drama! Illness!
I got to use a fire extinguisher yesterday.
I was at my desk around 3 pm when I heard someone yelling "help!" down the hall. At first I thought maybe it was a joke, but she kept yelling. I went down the hall to find one of the doctors on staff pointing at an engulfed toaster oven in the kitchen. She had pulled the plug on it, and at first I thought that keeping the door to the oven closed would kill the fire because of a lack of oxygen. When I saw the flames reach over the top of the oven, I decided to not wait around, grabbed the fire extinguisher out of the wall cabinet, and doused the sucker.
A few things to note: the smoke detector didn't go off. Because we don't have smoke detectors in our kitchens at work. How brilliant is that? Also, the fire extinguisher left a sandy, powdery mess everywhere. So use 'em when you have to, but that whole "shooting them off, oh such fun, play in the foam!" stuff is B.S. Fire extinguishers are nasty and they stink.
The facilities engineers came by about 15 minutes later and took a report. The head dude asked why we didn't call 911. Well, I would have liked to do that, but by the time y'all got here, the kitchen and then some would have burned down, since we called this in 15 minutes ago and you just showed up. The head honcho later sent an email saying, "good job", which is very nice and all, but really, why don't y'all have smoke detectors either in the kitchen or immediately outside, since you don't hear of many deadly copy-machine fires, but ovens are right up there? Give me smoke detectors, please, not kudos after a fire.
That was yesterday's drama. Today, not much drama, but I did wake up with a sore throat and a fever. I am quite bummed, since I wanted to wear my ghost earrings and Halloweenie socks to work. But I have to go to lab this afternoon since we have a test, so I'll get to wear them then. And infect my classmates. Yum!
Happy Halloween, y'all. Stay safe, stuff yourselves with candy, and drink some cider for me.
