Greetings from Flor-ee-duh!
Well, hello there! How are you? We are doing fine. It is a bit chilly here in Florida, meaning that it's only in the mid 60s to high 70s, sweltering by Seattle norms however everyone here is wearing parkas and talking end times. I spent yesterday afternoon in the pool.
We got in late Weds eve and since then it's been a go-go-go-go frenzy of cooking, gift wrapping, and visiting, but it's nice to see the relatives and play board games and make cookies. Last night I gave up and went to sleep at 9 pm and maaaaan did that feel good. There's nothing like a good sleep to make you feel awesome.
I'm trying to get a leg up on next quarter's readings and research, so I'm trying to do that reading during the day and fun reading at night. Believe it or not, it's really easy to fall asleep when reading about biomarkers. :-) Last night I started to read Steve Martin's book, Born Standing Up, since I have a wee bit of a crush on Mr. M. The book is unexpectedly sad, and not funny at all. He talks about lots of childhood abuse and his standoffish parents, so I ended up dreaming about my former days at the police department child abuse unit. Hmm. I'm hoping it gets a wee bit better when he moves out to the comedy circuit. Fingers crossed.
Onwards and upwards to the recommended list! Good recent reading:
Dancing with Rose by Lauren Kessler
No Speed Limit: The Highs and Lows of Meth by Frank Owen
Good former reading that if you haven't read you must read immediately:
Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder
Finally, geeky but necessary reading:
Ansel's tome, edited by Loyd V. Allen
(Yeah, not much to recommend in fiction reading. But plenty in public health! If we ever put together a blog-recommendation-reading-ring, I'll do the non-fiction section!)
Allrightie, I'm off to find some morning coffee, and it sounds like the parents are stirring. The doggie also needs a walk. I really want a Great Pyrenees dog, but after seeing how much room their dog Suggie Bear takes up, I am convinced that we need a 4-bedroom house for the dog, with 1 bedroom for us and the rest of the room for our herd.
Happy Christmas Eve Eve!
