New month, new post!

Hello there, and Happy February! Long time, no post!

Oh, many things have been keeping me busy, among them this whole working 2 jobs and 23 credits thing. But, as I keep telling myself, I am very lucky to have a job in this economy and am incredibly lucky to be in my program. So onwards and upwards!

In new news, I am incredibly proud of my fabulous husband, who has taken on a volunteer position teaching computer literacy classes at the university women's center. Have I mentioned how cool he is? Last week was his first week and he stayed super-late to clean up and answer student's questions. He rocks.

We are still on track to go to Rome in late March, and I've taken a few books out of the library to peruse them and see what to buy as a guidebook. I love National Geographic guides. They're gorgeous, they're detailed, and they give great historical background. Such a good read.

Back to the school thing--the new deal on my plate is what career path to take. Path one is the PharmD/MS, then do a clinical residency program to teach at an academic medical center. Path two is the PharmD/PhD, skipping the clinical residency, which is a longer academic path but would launch me right into academia/industry, largely skipping the clinical care route. I really do like taking care of patients, but the PhD will offer more career flexibility over time. But I'm also worried about being too over-educated, because I've seen people overspecialize and then get screwed in the job market. On the other hand, I've also seen people hit a ceiling because they don't have the magical PhD that allows them to get research funding, and NIH funding will only dry up more in the coming years. I'm also concerned that I might get bored in clinical care after a few years. Oh, decisions, decisions.

On to the 9 for '09! Let's see how that's shaping up. The list is finalized, with a few changes, and I'm making progress on them. Here it is!
1) Run a 5K (haven't done this in a few years)
2) Lose 10 lbs (my doctor will be very happy with me)
3) Finish the embroidery piece that I've been meaning to finish for, oh, 2 years
4) Finish two manuscripts that I'm working on through school
5) Do something for a charity each month-write a thank-you note with a check to a small local one, give a donation to a new one, etc (Jan-Point Defiance; Feb-Saving Pets One at a Time)
6) Blog 25 days of one month (that's going to be March-thanks, Gwen!)
7) Take a knife skills class
8) See one new international destination (March trip: Rome!)
9) Save at least $2000 above my usual savings goal.

Have a good week, y'all!

Can I even begin to tell you how impressed I am that you have a savings goal? Actually, maybe I should wait until March so that I can begin to tell you... :)

I keep meaning to post something about this on my own blog, but anyone who wants to join us in March, you should! It'll be fun, it'll make you popular, all the cool kids are doing it, etc. etc.

I'm definitely impressed with the goals, tho. I should put up some of my own. Thanks for the motivation!

p.s. Scott's volunteer work is really awesome:>

Knife skills isn't tae kwon do with weapons, like my sister does. :-) It's a cooking class where they show you how to properly use a knife, and then reinforce it again and again during the class. I have terrible knife skills, so I'll get lazy while using my chef's knife and then *wham* take off another part of my thumb. I'm thinking of offering out my services as an informal crazy-gluer-of-digits person. Too bad they don't have a degree for that.
