Happy New Year!

Happy New Year, everyone! I hope all of you are having a restful, relaxing holiday season--which is almost over. :-( I'm finally getting used to this whole "sleeping in, hanging out, not doing homework" thing and it's time to go back to school. Damn.

We're back in town now after spending a few days in Florida. Seattle ended up buried in snow. Beh-reed. Let me say that again: buried. We normally get a dusting of snow, or maybe an inch downtown. We managed to get 10 inches total over 3 days. It got to the point where I'd stick my head outside and say, "is it going to stop?" And of course, our namsy-pamsy do-nothing mayor didn't put down salt (to protect salmon) and didn't plow any minor arterials (I can't explain that other to say that the guy's a dumbass). Anyhoos, our car was snowbound in the garage and the only thing to do was to wait for the snow to melt. We hoofed it to the bus, spent 90 minutes on the bus to the airport, was told our flight was cancelled, was told our flight wasn't cancelled, was told our flight was on-time, was told the plane would be there in 30 minutes six times over, and managed to eventually get to Florida, 24 hours after we started the trip. We had a great time, and the trip back was mercifully uneventful. Yippee!

So now that it's the New Year, I'm working on nine new things to do for 2009, or 9 for '09. Gwen does something similar called 31 for 31. I think doing 9 new things in 2009 better than resolutions (which I inevitably break after, oh, a week) because then I can space these suckers out.

Small problem--don't quite have 9 yet. So here they are so far in no particular order, the 9 for '09, with suggestions gladly accepted:
1) Run a 5K (haven't done this in a few years);
2) Lose 10 lbs (my doctor will be very happy with me);
3) Finish the embroidery piece that I've been meaning to finish for, oh, 2 years;
4) Learn to tango;
5) Do something for a charity each month-write a thank-you note with a check to a small local one, give a donation to a new one, etc (thanks to SBJ for thinking this one up!);
6,7,8,9) ??

Some of the ones I'm mulling over are: blog regularly, visit a new state/country, take a kayaking class out on Lake Union (I mean, it's across from where I work, c'mon!), save X amount of money. Hmm. Oh, well, I'll keep thinking. In the meantime, Happy New Year!

Yay! This makes me happy, and if it's OK with you, I am going to copy your idea about monthly donations. Unfortunately, two of my 31 for 31 items have already become moot because the websites they were based on are now defunct. Boo.

If you wanted to borrow the one I did about blogging almost every day for a month, we could pick the same month and do it together -- like having an exercise buddy. No pressure at all, but I would love some company on that one if it appeals to you.

Y'all need to do NaBloPoMo in November. That one is crazy-making, but it's sorta fun because lots of people are doing it at the same time so there's a lot of "argh, nothing to say, have to write" entries. Kind of funny to see how people deal with the pressure.

Or you could start Twittering as one of your nine things. I just signed up a week or so ago, and I'm totally hooked. It is awesome.

The closest thing I have to a resolution is that I want to start keeping the house cleaner, because it bothers me that 90% of the time, I would be mortified if someone dropped by our house. But with a toddler and a messy husband, I don't know how successful I'll be with that one.
