The wedding!

OK, I'm back. The last couple of days have included cat surgery, a lot of cat vomit, some cat dookie, and cat hair. Plus the usual school crap, work crap, and life crap. Meh. But back to the fun stuff! Sorry, y'all, but this upload might be very slow on your browsers because it's full of picture goodness.

Caroline and Dale had a beautiful wedding. They were married in San Jose el Viejo, a church in Antigua that has been abandoned after a series of earthquakes, and is now used for special events.

Inside the church, they had beautiful sand carpets, called alfombras. The sand carpets are an Antiguan tradition. They commonly appear around Easter. Local artists put down stencils and fill the intricate patterns with sand. You can read more about the Antiguan sand carpets here.

Yes, this is all sand. They also had about 1000 candles inside the church. No kidding.

Afterwards, we tossed beautiful petals at them and waited to board the chicken buses because we were ready to pah-tee.
Seriously? My husband is a freaking hottie.

Chicken buses can be used to get around pretty much anywhere, but they're really risky business. Belching smoke with funky brakes and poor maintenance, often filled to the brim with people and animals, hence the name, they are the buses often involved in accidents on Central American roads. But for getting to the reception site they're festive and fun.

The reception was held at Las Capuchinas, a convent that was abandoned after an earthquake. It was lovely, it was outdoors, and this fountain was basically turned into a massive centerpiece. This article gives a good overview of the convent and other sites in the town of Antigua. You may recognize the cathedral in the photo from my previous post; yup, same cathedral.

Holy crap, no? Gorgeous.

This was the presentation for the cake. I think the cake had a nicer bed than I did for that night. Crazy.

Finally, at the end of a long night of partying, I said goodnight to fellow Princetonian Paul and his girlfriend. Yes, I look like crap here, but I was actually sober. With messy mascara.

Scott and I then congratulated the groom, and headed back to our hotel for some shuteye before a journey to Lake Atitlan the next day. Whew! More soon on the Pan-American highway adventure, the lake, and why I heart UW travel medicine.

Finally, a Happy Burfday shout-out to Dad and Aunt Lulu, who both turn 39 today. Huzzah!
