Father's Day
Today is the first official Father's Day where I get to write about my extended family. :-)
Scott and I were married in July of last year. Since then, I gained Dr. Neil as my father-in-law, and Papa Doc and Papa Russ as grandfathers. Sadly, Papa Russ left us this year. Papa Doc is still with us. He lives in North Andover, MA and roots for the Red Sox every chance he gets. :-)
My grandfathers passed away awhile ago. Grandpa Bernie died in 1991. Grandpa was really the keystone of our family; when he died, our family fell apart and drifted. Only recently have we started to reconnect with one another. Grandpa was a good man who graduated salutatorian of his high school class and worked at General Motors in Linden, NJ until he retired. I loved Grandpa very, very much, and he has been my role model throughout my life.
Grandpa Dick was my maternal grandfather. I didn't know him as well as Grandpa Bernie. Grandpa Dick had a hard life. He fought in World War II, and during that time his brother was killed during an assault on an atoll in the southern Pacific. That, plus a chronic malaria infection and alcoholism, ensured his estrangement from the family. But during his final years he showed a great affection for my little sister Catie plus my little sister Colleen. His show of affection for them gave me hope that somewhere underneath his gruff exterior was a man who had affection for others. I think he did love all of us, but he just didn't know how to show it.
Moving on to happier men: Dr. Neil and my dad. To my father-in-law: I couldn't have asked for a better father-in-law. You are a supportive father-in-law who wants what is best for your son and his family. Thank you for all you have done to raise a wonderful son who is loving, empathetic, and caring (thank you too Beth! :-) You're funny, smart, and caring, and I can't wait to dish public health with you again. I'm glad that you are my father-in-law. Beth, I'm sorry it's late in saying so for Mother's Day, but I'm grateful to have such a wonderful, intelligent, articulate woman as you as my mother-in-law. I love you both very much.
For mom, Happy belated Mom's Day posting. You are awesome and I love you to pieces. To my own father: I love you, dad, for all you are, and for all you are yet to become. Happy Father's Day.
