Off to the vet
Sammy and Butters will be at the vet while we're gone because of their respective health problems. Sampson has megacolon and needs medicine 3 times a day. Butters has asthma and uses inhalers.
Insert your joke here.
I now have a bit of a complex about going to the vet, because I feel that my success as a cat mom is tied to whether or not their illnesses are under control, and if they're losing weight. On the last visit, Butters had gained a bunch of weight. Blech. Yuck. Meh. But that actually turned out to be a good thing. Yes, you're reading that correctly.
A few months ago Butters was diagnosed with early-onset renal disease. We put him on a renal diet, which is high in calories because *most* cats with renal disease are wasting away. Well, not our lil'porkie pot pie. On his last visit to the vet, took blood and urine, because given his weight gain and how cranky he was, we expected the worst.
Here's the kicker: he gained weight and improved all of his blood values. His renal values are perfect. Blood glucose? Perfect. No sugar in the urine. Cholesterol has come down. His triglycerides are still high, but they're lower than they were before. When the vet told me this, I screeched into the phone, "getting FATTER is GOOD for my cat??!?@#!" Humans should be so lucky; America would be one healthy country.
So that is the kitty cat update, and why I thought Butters was going to buy it for awhile there, but it turns out that he's just a grumpy bastard. Come between the boy and his food, and you're asking for it. I feel bad that we have to board him and Sammy for the week while we're gone, but as my husband so succinctly stated it tonight, we cannot be slaves to feline asthma and constipation woes.
