Ruminating on running
I'm trying to figure out a fitness regimen that'll work for me. Here's a funny--everyone I know seems to like the Shrd by JMichaels. I recently got it out from N-flix, and it's been sitting next to our DVD player. How's that for motivation? I'm going to watch some of it tonight before I go to bed (yes, I realize that's not the point of a workout DVD) and then decide if I could buy the DVD for $8 online and use it in the future, or if JM drives me batty.
Years ago I used to run on a regular basis. Loved it. As a result, I slept better, was about 35 pounds lighter, had boundless energy, and felt great. I also had a much lighter schedule. But, this upcoming quarter, I'm only taking 16 credits instead of 23, so I can make more time for exercise.
Instead of going hog-wild for running, though, I'm thinking of putting some local 5Ks on my calendar and walking them. That way I've made the commitment, paid the cash, and maybe even ponied up some money for a cause. Then, assuming we're in town for Turkey Day (we usually are), walking the half-marathon the day after Thanksgiving. I figure it's better than nothing, but is it really lame to walk a half-marathon? Should I go all-or-nothing and run it? I'm thinking that if I can jog a few 5Ks this year (like, 2-3 :-) I'll be happy, and then walk the 13.1 miles in November. Or maybe that's lame. Blergh. Leave it to me to over-think an exercise routine, which is supposed to help me get healthy and relax.

Lol. I'm terrible with the exercise motivation, too. However, I am a very competitive person, so I just signed up for this online "league" thing with Todd and a couple of his friends. The way it works is you log in to this website every day (or however often you exercise, ha) and log the type of exercise you did and how many minutes, and it calculates a certain number of points for you. And then you compete against each other for points. The "league" starts later this week, so I'm hoping it will get me motivated to exercise more.
But I don't think I could ever run anything more than a couple of blocks. And even that would probably kill me. :)
Good luck!
I'd think you were a badass if you even put the words "I" and "half-marathon" in the same sentence, regardless of whether you were running or walking or roller-skating or being pulled by a team of mules.
I will also say, I got sick of Jillian before I wanted to -- namely, as soon as I felt like I was bored to tears with the first level but wasn't really ready to move on to the second level. I avoid competition and am pretty lazy in general, so the only exercise that truly works for me is dance classes. The whole self-motivating thing is a little beyond me.
I just can't bring myself to run since I had to quit crew in college (F&M crew: the other running team). Anyway, good for you for trying to get back in the saddle.
I was thinking about walking a half marathon but it won't be until next year. I just don't think I could juggle the training schedule with school right now. Maybe I'm just a weenis and am looking for an excuse. But I support you!
Alissa, can I join your exercise league?
Alissa, would you send me the exercise league info? That sounds like just the thing to get my competitive nature going. :-)
