I'm not a professional cleaner, but I play one on TV
Y'all must, and I do mean MUST go out RIGHT NOW and buy a Dyson vacuum cleaner. Oh my Gawd. I'm in love. We bought the animal model yesterday. Why? Well, I'm sick of trying to vacuum old-school with the hose off of our not-quite-adequate older vacuum. In the interest of full disclosure, Scott did a lot of the vacuuming. But not anymore! Oh NO, let me tell you, this thing is wonderful, had our carpets looking great in under 20 minutes, and sucked up a ton of cat hair and dirt. Oh you sexy James Dyson--if I wasn't already taken, I'd fly to Britain and look you up.
Oh and the other reason for the super-powered vacuum? Freaking Casper has fleas. Again. Sammy is fine. I have no idea how he picked 'em up again. Blech.

Ok, you're probably the hundredth person I've heard sing the praises of the Dyson, but here's my issue: how light is it? Because our stairs are carpeted, and if I have to vacuum them, the sucker (ha, accidental pun) had better weigh almost nothing. And the Dyson's that I've seen in the store? They seem pretty heavy to me. I'm looking for some kind of in-between solution: good vacuum + lightweight for carrying up & down stairs.
We got an animal Dyson for the holidays and we love it! We have a boxer that sheds so we thought this vacuum cleaner would be a godsend with the baby and all. The first time we used it we were grossed out by how much stuff got sucked up. I looked at Brian and told him that I had fallen in love with a vacuum cleaner. i can't believe that we have gone this long without one. I think everyone should own one.
It weighs about 20 pounts, so it is heavier than most. But it works so well that lifting it is totally worth it. :-) I think the DC17 model has a longer extension hose...
