Hello, ass-whupping!

This is a story about horribly misguided good intentions.

The last two years my work group has wanted to do Ski-to-Sea, a relay race from the top of Mt. Baker to Bellingham Bay. The series of events is cross-country, downhill ski, 8 miles running, 40 miles road biking, canoeing, mountain biking, and then sea kayaking. Last year and this year things fell apart because we couldn't get enough people to do it or people were out of town, etc.

As a dovetail to this discussion, my partner-in-crime SBJ suggested that we do a charity event. Oh but not just ANY event, but the Big Climb for Leukemia. That would be 1,311 stairs, 788 feet elevation, 69 flights at 19 stairs per flight.

What's the thought there, Cara? WTF was I thinking? Yep, that would be it.

Obviously, our idiotic heroine has said yes. Tonight I started training. Ha. Ha. Haaaaaaaaaaa. You see, I am fantastically out of shape, and I haven't really exercised in the last month thanks to the teeth. (Throbbing tooth=love the ibuprofen and go to bed, don't go to the gym). I don't know about the rest of y'all, but my face turns beet red when I work out and my head pounds anyways, thus trying to do much of anything with the root canals was horrendous.

Anyhoos, back to the story. Two fake teeth and one fat ass later, I'm in training for the big climb. The very bottom of our building to the very top is 10 flights of stairs. Tonight I climbed 16 flights total and threw in a few backwards flights as well to build up the ol' hammies. This tiny, teeny workout kicked my ass and my quads burned like a mo fo. Now I am suddenly taking this with a big dose of uh-oh and am realizing that if I'm going to really cover 1311 steps then I need to start moving on this pronto.

I don't have a real training plan but I think it'll be lots of stairs, to start jogging regularly again, and add in some weights. Thank God we're in the noncompetitive division. There are people who do the whole event in 8 minutes. EIGHT MINUTES, PEOPLE. I will be lucky to have covered 10 flights in that time. Argh. I wonder if I can bring a camelback of syrah with me. Blech. Ack. Wish me luck.
